MFA Thesis Book

This book is a reflective anthology documenting the extensive body of work from my MFA thesis, "There is Magic in Letting Go: Encouraging Improvisation in the Design Process," completed in May 2015 at Boston University. While a thesis book was not required for my program, I chose to create one out of my deep passion for cataloging, production work, and unique analogue experiences. It was important to me to document the large number of projects contained within my thesis research and to craft a tactile, enduring piece that embodies the very spirit of improvisation.
Through my supporting thesis projects, I explored the significance of improvisational methods in the design process—embracing both successes and failures, experimenting with digital and analogue technologies, and uncovering new ways to create compelling narratives. To visually express this theme, I designed a double-sided foredge print that reads "experience” in one direction, “improvisation" the other direction.
This typographic detail reinforces the core philosophy of my thesis—that design thrives in moments of spontaneity and adaptation.
I created the book design using InDesign, including the complex double-foredge print experience, ensuring that the final piece was both conceptually and technically precise. Additionally, I handled the pre-press production and managed the printing process through Blurb, ensuring the highest quality execution.
This book was selected for Design Observer’s Thesis Book Project and is available for purchase through Blurb.
